As we enter the twilight of another year on this earth my thoughts drift towards Christmas holidays, time off work and attempting to write a Game Of The Year list for Games Freezer.

⚔️๐Ÿฆ Story of a Gladiator | REVIEW | "A wobbling, sideways thumb from the Emperor" ⚔️๐Ÿฆ #GameDev #IndieGames

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On
Story Of A Gladiator is a 2D arena fighter that’s fun for a while with great presentation and some tense moments but feels too much like a time killer to be a must-play title.
Story of a Gladiator sets the tone straight away, when your family is taken away from you and your home is destroyed, the player character is then reduced to being a lowly alcoholic beggar.
After some serious self-pitying, you decide to make your fame and fortune in the bloodstained sands of the arena.  And so, in a city under Roman rule, you must hack and slash your way into the annals of history.

When thinking of Pig Eat Ball imagine a game that puts you in control of a pig in disguise as she attempts to suck up tennis inside a clam in order to win pearls and open up more areas of the game map all accompanied by a thumping soundtrack and bat shit crazy psychedelic visuals with an overtone of Hotline Miami and Monty Python.

Everspace is a roguelike single-player game where you fly a spaceship and there is a story, told through flashbacks.
In Everspace, you have to die to succeed. Sounds weird but it’s true! When you die you can use your credits to buy upgrades and even new ships to go back and get farther than the last time.

A solid single-player, pixel-art Metroidvania, SuperEpic is an absolute joy for the vast majority of its running time but a lacklustre final sprint combined with a diabolical map system detracts from what could have been a truly memorable title.

๐Ÿ•น️๐ŸŽฎ The Argos Catalogue & Video Games in the 1970s, 80s & 90s | A Trip Down Memory Lane ๐Ÿ•น️๐ŸŽฎ #RetroGaming @Argos_Online

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On
Growing up in the UK as a kid during the 1970s, 80s and 90s meant that the Argos catalogue was a British kid's go-to piece of literature should you want to plan your next birthday or Christmas presents.

My first port of call was always the Video Games section which I looked at on a daily basis leading up to Christmas and Birthdays. My sister and I would play the Argos catalogue game where you would have to choose one item to buy from EVERY page and then initial it. I'd often end up having to circle and initial a duvet set that I didn't want to be followed by a Corby trouser press.

When we got to the Video Games section though the choice would be impossible to make as I was presented with all the latest video games related accessories and consoles!

My love for the Argos catalogue has carried on to this day and I still pick up a copy to circle items while playing the catalogue game.

Then something special happened recently when I stumbled across the Argos Book Of Dreams website which Argos have pulled together to make every Argos catalogue available online in a digital format! argosbookofdreams.co.uk

Britt’s Games of the Year
2019 has been another great year in my gaming career, with a lot of quality titles released. Aside from some real indie classics (my true love), there were also some larger budget titles that caught my eye that I’m happy to include here as games that stuck in my head for 2019… and also a couple that stayed with me for reasons that *ahem* aren’t ideal.

⛳️ BOLF | REVIEW | PC | EARLY ACCESS | "Take The Driver Out The Bag and Get Ready To Hit A Turkey!" ๐ŸŽณ #bolfgame #GameDev #IndieGames

BOLF the video game takes the idea of mixing Ten Pin Bowling with Golf on full-size golf courses and at this moment in time goes about 25% of the way towards turning this into a fully realised video game idea.

I love golf games a lot, to the point where I did a 19 episode Golf video games feature on retro golf games for Games Freezer.

⚽ GOLAZO! | Review | Nintendo Switch "A 90's Inspired Arcade Soccer Romp" ⚽ #GolazoTheGame

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On
GOLAZO! Evokes the memories I had of playing footy games like Football Champ in the Arcades and the awesome TECMO World Cup series as well as taking inspiration from the SNK football games such as Super Sidekicks.
The game takes on a 7 a side, cartoon, no rules approach to footy games that I simply love in an era when we are swamped with ultra-realistic dull football simulations that have lost their identity and character.
The game is, however, slightly let down by a few small things that annoyed me so let’s take a gander at what I liked and disliked about this little gem before we sum it all up.

I’m a big fan of well-made games that have a tongue firmly in cheek whilst being backed up by fun gameplay. In this regard, Door Kickers: Action Squad delivers shovelfuls of gaming gold.

A slightly different type of game to what I was initially expecting and all the better for it.

⛏️⚔️ Forager | REVIEW | PC | "simple but in-depth mechanics" ⛏️⚔️ #GameDev #IndieGames

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On
Forager doesn’t seem to have a story but it does have some solid gameplay. It’s made by the same people who made Impossible Dungeon which was a four-player game which I personally haven’t played but does look pretty good. Although I don’t usually enjoy games without a story behind them, I did enjoy this one.
