For most of us, long journeys are a bit of a drag. There’s a lot of sitting around, waiting, and restlessness before we reach our exciting destination, and it can be tough to find ways to pass the time.

The key to keeping yourself entertained is variation. That novel you’re reading might be great, but are you really gonna want to sit and read for the next six hours straight? Probably not.

What you need are a few options. So if you’re looking for some ideas on how to pass the time whilst you’re travelling, check out the list below for some boredom-busting activities that’ll keep you entertained.

Talk To Strangers
If you’re on a long train, plane or bus journey, chances are the people around you are just as bored as you are. Everyone has at least one interesting story to tell and you may as well hear it now, right? Plus - you’d be surprised by some of the escapades that began with a random conversation struck up by strangers on a train...

So try speaking to your fellow travellers. If they’re friendly, ask where and why they’re travelling, what they do for a living, if they know any cool places you could check out. If you’re in an unfamiliar place, a chat with local travellers can help you explore your destination more authentically than the shop-bought travel guides.

Play Some Games
Admittedly, not everyone is gonna want to chat. And if you’re bored with your book, you might want something a bit more hands-on to pass the next few hours. And what better than a great new game to get lost in?

If you’re looking for something new and compelling to try on your journey, check out the Daymare Town Series, The Maze, or lightning roulette for some online games that’ll help you make it to your destination without getting bored.

Listen to a Podcast
If, like many of us, you need more than one thing going on to keep you absorbed, why not try combining your gameplay with a riveting podcast?

Lot’s of great options here from comedy gold like My Dad Wrote A Porno, to journalistic investigations like S-Town, to true-crime shenanigans like Drunk Women Solving Crime - if none of these catch your fancy, you’ll definitely find something here.

Keep a Diary
For the aspiring writers out there - you might regret not keeping a proper diary of your travels for after your fourth novel is published and your leagues of die-hard fans are eager for an insight into your formative years.
Also, writing diary entries is a pleasant, meditative way to pass the time that you may not have many opportunities for in your everyday life. Long train, plane and bus rides provide a unique opportunity to reflect and hone your self-expression through recounting memories of your journey.

Learn Another Language (Or At Least, Some Useful Phrases)
This idea is particularly useful if you’re travelling to a country where the spoken language is different from your mother-tongue.

It’s nice to arrive at your destination with at least a few choice phrases up your sleeve to help you order your dinner and thank your hosts for their hospitality. So get yourself a phrasebook, or download one of these useful travel apps to pass the time productively as you travel.
