It Came From Space and Ate Our Brains is a stylised voxel-based shooter that was originally released on PC in 2015 and is reminiscent of titles such as the mighty dead Nation and has shades of Neon Chrome.

It Came From Space and Ate Our Brains is a super-smooth and addictive isometric game that revels in its local co-op, split-screen glory but whilst it’s a solid and fun title, its basic premise and singular focus may not be to everyone’s tastes.
Up to four players can jump in on the action, action which entails blasting those pesky brain-devouring aliens out of existence with a selection of weapons and upgrades. The levels are suitably moody locations, wrapped in darkness which only your trusty flashlight can pierce.
Playing with my trusty companion ‘Co-op Chris’, we tucked into It Came From Space and Ate Our Brains with bourbons in hand (well, on a nearby table) and what struck us was how sneakily tough it became despite its self-aware and jokey presentation, it became apparent that the game would require our full focus and some serious teamwork…good!

Choosing the right weapon for the job is the key here as the basic, zombie-like aliens quickly give way to more robust creatures and teleporting, swift attackers that can chew through your health quicker than Cujo through a Pink Panther wafer biscuit.

The basic premise of surviving, along with with a partner to the end of each area is quite barebones and something we’ve seen a lot of before but the stylised, voxel visuals, brooding soundtrack and toughness do make this a great challenge.

It runs extremely smoothly and looks great with a campaign that lasts several hours, this isn’t a game you’ll smash through in a couple of tries, you really need to have some luck and take time in your approach to the hordes that befall you.
It Came From Space and Ate Our Brains isn’t a game I’d play in single-player mode as I can imagine it would feel a bit flat and very difficult! This is clearly designed as a multiplayer experience and in co-operative modes, the game really shines and I can assure you that we plan to make it through to the end, shotguns and flashlights in hand, wide-eyed in concentration covered in the sticky, neon blood of our enemies.

Just got to make sure I choose the right upgrades…

Right, I’m off to drag my square ass to victory!
