Given that I run this website, it’s hardly surprising to learn that I love gaming. However, even I hit stages where I’m not in the mood to switch on a console and play. Thankfully, that doesn’t mean I can’t still get my gaming fix.

Here are just five ways I love to relax and enjoy gaming even when I’m not playing my console. I hope they can help you in troubled times too.

How much do you love video games, computers and consoles?

Do you obsess over the great tech from years gone by and reminisce over the legendary video games that you played as child through your teenage years and now still play those games in adulthood?

Chances are then you’ve heard of a certain guy called the Nostalgia Nerd aka Peter Leigh.

Upon its original release, I picked up Divinity 2: Original Sin and spent thirty frustrating hours with it before uninstalling it from my hard drive and giving up.
Through a mix of glitches, difficulty spikes, strange design choices and a general sense of the game being incomplete, I chalked it up to just not being my thing and moved on to other games.
Now, eighteen months or so later, I thought I’d give it another crack as I’ve been ill for a while and just fancied cancelling all my plans and spending a weekend relaxing and getting hips deep into a full-on RPG to soak up my time.

With its charming, colourful visuals and humourous text, Monster Loves You raised a chuckle or two and a few smiles from me but I couldn’t shake the sense that this feels like a mobile port due to its repetitive nature and shallow depth.

When I think of “green hell”, the first thing that springs to mind is the back garden at my house, in which there is a surprisingly large variety of flora and fauna, kept vaguely in check by the efforts of my ever-suffering wife and the frankly unexpected level of teamwork exhibited by our six cats.

I haven’t played the two previous games in the series but from what I can gather this is more of the same.

The Hero of the Kingdom series seems to be geared more towards causal players as the game has the faintest whiff of a story about it but the real focus here appears to be grinding and passing time, two factors that make me feel that this would be more at home on a tablet or phone than a PC.

๐Ÿ’ฐ๐ŸŽฎ๐Ÿ’ฐ How To Earn Money From Your Gaming Passion ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐ŸŽฎ๐Ÿ’ฐ

In pre-internet days, gaming was something we did to kick back and relax at the end of a busy day. From playing Monty Mole on our Commodores to playing Sonic on our Megadrives, we spent our hard-earned cash on games that would entertain us.

Then the internet arrived, and gaming changed forever. It allowed us to become more social, giving us the opportunity to play games online with people from around the world.

It gave us the opportunity to play downloadable games, allowing us to play games almost instantly (unless you were on dial-up), instead of having to trek to the High Street games store for something to play. And the internet gave us the opportunity to do something many obsessive gamers have always dreamed of: the ability to make money from gaming!

As I’m sure many people reading this can relate to, I’ve always had a fascination with spy thrillers, no doubt started by watching one too many Bond movies as a kid and marvelling at how 007 manages to save the world time and again while wisecracking, raising eyebrows and bedding every woman that walks within 15 metres of him.

Procedurally generated games all have the same question hanging over them, ‘is the procedural generation there to cover up the fact that there was no time to design levels individually?’
It’s something that doesn’t really gel with me, I’ve had some good times with games that utilised procedural-generation as a main feature such as Nongunz and Last Encounter but for the most part my experience has been pretty negative and sadly, 99Floors suffers from the usual pitfalls of this particular design quirk.

Like many, I’ve recently found myself turning away from the high-price Triple-A games towards the indie scene for my fix of truly novel gaming. As a long-time fan of the space trading and 4X genre, I’m always on the lookout for really innovative takes on a traditional formula.

If I’m to get into a game, it needs to have a certain amount of depth in which to immerse my imagination, and it has to be said that few studios do depth like the two-man team of Cory and Andrew Trese.
