Wayo Records’ previous release - a double 12-inch, gatefold presentation of the always-welcome Yuzo Koshiro’s 1990 Actraiser - has been followed up by something distinctly more cartoonish in nature, namely the well-received 1993 French 2D platformer, Mr Nutz. 

Presented on double, 180g bright orange vinyl, Mr Nutz doubles down on what we’ve come to expect from Wayo Records. The pressing is immaculate and plays beautifully, the artwork - by original Mr Nutz artist Philippe Dessoly - is vivid and rich (if you are quick, you’ll be able to nab a signed shikishi which I can confirm is frame-ably good) and the visuals are completed by the inclusion of a full-size colour booklet that contains the thoughts and reminiscences of those involved in the creation of Mr Nutz; namely Raphael Gesqua, Philippe Dessoly and Pierre Adane.

These booklets really hit the mark for me and are a much appreciated and informative companion to the music as they give insight into not only the creation of the character but also the events leading up to the foundations of the game as well as the lasting impact on those involved, I hope they continue to be a  mainstay in the Wayo Records catalogue.

Ah, the music! Flitting between the kind of wide-eyed, ‘audio smiles’ that could accompany quality children’s television, spooky Disney and even some bubbly Mario-esque pieces, the twenty-two tracks on the record take you across the worlds and boss areas that make up the game.

I am a big fan of how ‘SNES’ Mr Nutz sounds, with a punchy and bright remaster – courtesy of Benjamin Joubert- elevating things and making the prominent, expressive bass so tasty that it’s almost a nutritious consumable.

The echoing drums and rolling melodies completely, richly capture that Super Nintendo vibe and make the record stand out in my collection as possibly one of the best vinyl examples of audio so representative of the parent console that the music was taken from, it really nails that SNES tone!
