System 3 has lifted the curtain on Putty World, a sweeping reimagining of its beloved Putty franchise, offering attendees at Tokyo Game Show an early glimpse at the project’s technology, animation, and evolving gameplay. Set for release on Nintendo Switch 2 in Q2 2027, the game marks the beginning of the studio’s new “What If?” initiative a creative exploration of how classic games might have looked and played if modern hardware had existed decades earlier.

A New Era of Retro Appreciation

While retro gaming nostalgia often centres on 1980s pixel art, System 3 believes the next wave of appreciation will spotlight the mid‑1990s a transitional era defined by pre‑rendered animation frames, expressive 2D characters, and the final flourish of sprite‑based creativity before polygons took over.

Putty World asks a simple but provocative question: What if Nintendo Switch 2 hardware had existed in the mid‑1990s?

The project aims to reinterpret the original Putty titles through that lens, blending the humour, charm, and personality of the classics with the fluidity, responsiveness, and visual fidelity made possible by modern hardware.

“We’re not simply reproducing a game from the past,” said Mark Cale, founder and CEO of System 3. “We’re revisiting the original creative vision without the technical limitations of the era, combining the character and humour of the originals with the detail and fluidity now possible on Nintendo Switch 2.”

The build shown at TGS is an early playable technology and graphics demonstration, designed to highlight:

  • evolving dual‑stick controls

  • fully recreated visuals

  • richer animation

  • improved playability

  • significantly increased fluidity

System 3 emphasises that this is not the final game, and that content, levels, enemies, and bosses are still in active development ahead of the 2027 launch.

Three Putty Worlds Connected in One Game

Putty World unifies the worlds of Putty, Super Putty, and Putty Squad into a single connected experience. As players progress, they unlock updated and reimagined levels inspired by entries across the series.

Planned content includes:

  • 75 new or extensively updated levels

  • 45+ newly created enemies

  • expanded enemy behaviours and reactions

  • new end‑of‑level bosses and dedicated boss battles

Putty himself has been given a major expressive overhaul, now featuring over 50 facial‑expression combinations that allow him to react dynamically to the world around him.

From Nintendo Switch to Nintendo Switch 2

At gamescom, System 3 showcased the scale of the transformation by directly comparing Putty Squad on Nintendo Switch with Putty World running on Nintendo Switch 2. The contrast highlighted:

  • completely recreated graphics

  • more detailed character renders

  • richer animation

  • modernised controls

  • improved playability

  • substantially greater fluidity

The game targets a stable 60fps, supports 1080p in handheld mode, and scales up to 4K on TV.

A Mid‑1990s Classic, Reimagined Without Limits

System 3’s ambition is clear: to capture the imagination and distinctive character of a mid‑1990s platformer, rebuilt with the power and flexibility of Nintendo Switch 2 a “retro‑future” interpretation of what Putty could have been.

More gameplay, development updates, and content details will be revealed as production continues toward the game’s Q2 2027 release.
