End of physical discs will give gaming companies a power-up over players

EXPERT COMMENT: End of physical discs will give gaming companies a power-up over players

This week, Sony announced that were going to cease production of physical discs from January 2028 for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles.

It's a decision that means less consumer power for those holding the controller, according to Dr Nick Webber, Professor of Game Studies at Birmingham City University (BCU) and co-lead of the Game Cultures research cluster at the university’s Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research(BCMCR).

It's even easier for game companies to control, and remove, access to games. Credit: BCU

“Sony's announcement of the end of physical media is unsurprising, given that the majority of video games are now bought digitally,” said Dr Webber.

“But, for both players and for people working in games preservation, the removal of discs from the PlayStation ecosystem, and likely also from XBOX, represents an important shift.

“These changes have to be understood alongside recent, unsuccessful attempts to place legal duties on game providers to support preservation processes and provide ongoing access to games.

“For example, in 2024 the US Copyright Office refused to grant a games preservation exemption from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and just last month, the Stop Killing Games campaign was rebuffed by the European Commission.

“Unfortunately for players, the end of physical media represents a power shift which makes it even easier for game companies to control, and remove, access to games.

“For game preservation experts, this change will increase the difficulty of preserving games without the explicit permission of game developers and publishers, as the focus shifts away from challenges such as bit rot and media degradation, and onto the relationship between collecting organisations and IP owners instead.”

John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando PC Review 8/10 "John Carpenter’s name may be on the box, but Saber Interactive brings the bite" 🧟‍♀️

John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando PC Review 8/10
Toxic Commando Review – The Best Left 4 Dead‑Style Zombie Blast in Years

An hour into John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, I was curious about what exactly Carpenter had contributed to this game. After all, this PvE zombie shooter has no aesthetic or thematic similarities to his work, and despite his impeccable horror pedigree, Carpenter has never made a zombie movie. If anything, it’s stylistically much more reminiscent of James Gunn than Carpenter.

So I did some research. And…I was not brought on as a creative force, except they wanted to use my name, so they paid me to use my name.” As it turns out, aside from providing a few pieces of music (which I suspect were lurking on his hard drive long before this project), Carpenter’s involvement, in his own words, was “Well, I played it!”

Fair enough! Might as well be David James’ Toxic Commando then, because I also played it… And I think it’s just great!

My Mount Rushmore Of Video Games Consoles 🪨🗿

My Mount Rushmore Of Video Games Consoles
If I were to carve a Mount Rushmore of video game consoles, honouring my personal picks of the most iconic and influential systems in gaming history, these four would be my picks.

🗿 1. Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) – The Saviour [1986]

My Mount Rushmore Of Video Games Consoles
Why it belongs: Rescued the industry after the 1983 crash and redefined home gaming.
Legacy: Introduced franchises like Super Mario Bros., Zelda, and Metroid.
Impact: Standardised the D-pad, cartridges, and third-party licensing.

"Okay, so I never owned an NES, but what I do know is that this grey box that sat under millions of TV sets across the USA and the rest of the world was a primary reason that we have a video games industry today. I remember when my mate Briggsy got an NES in the late 80s for his 10th birthday, and we all went round his house to just sit there and watch him play Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Castlevania. For me at that age, the NES felt out of reach as it looked like a luxury product that my pocket money would never be able to stretch to. So alas, I never got to own the grey oblong, but what I do know is that we owe Nintendo a lot because of this little grey box."

I Play Too Many Games. Boosting Services Fixed That.

How juggling multiple MMOs kept me stuck in the grind, and how selective boosts finally let me reach the endgame I actually enjoy.

I have a problem. Not a serious one, but it costs me time, and it used to cost me enjoyment.

The problem is that I can't stick to one game.

My name's Cael. I'm thirty-one, I work in logistics, and at any given moment I'm actively interested in at least three or four

games simultaneously. Right now, that's WoW Midnight, FFXIV, and Path of Exile 2. A month ago, it was WoW, Helldivers 2,

and I was half-watching someone stream Arc Raiders and getting curious. This is just how I game. Always has been.

The issue isn't the variety. I like variety. The issue is what happens when you try to play multiple live-service games seriously.

The Endgame Problem

Every game on my list has the same structure. There's the part you can play casually — levelling, story, early content — and

then there's the part that's actually interesting once you understand the game. Raids. High-level dungeons. Endgame crafting.

The content that people talk about in communities, that gets patched, updated and discussed.

To access that content, you have to get there first. And getting there, in most live-service games, takes a meaningful chunk

of time.

In WoW Midnight, that's levelling to 90, running the campaign, gearing up enough to get into Heroic raids or high M+ keys.

In FFXIV, it's levelling a job, getting gear for the current Savage tier, and farming gil for consumables. In Path of Exile 2,

It's clearing campaign, building currency, getting your character to a point where the actual endgame systems open up.

None of that is unenjoyable exactly. But when you're cycling between three games, doing it simultaneously is brutal.

You're never fully in the endgame of anything. You're always in the middle of the grind leading up to it.

The 7th Guest Remake Xbox Series X Review 9/10 "Stauf is back!" 🔦🕯️

The 7th Guest Remake Xbox Series X Review
The 7th Guest Remake Review – Wine, Whispers and the Wonders of Stauf’s House

A Haunting Journey Through a Reborn Classic

I can’t believe that it was back in 2023 when I reviewed The 7th Guest VR, of which this game is a port. Awarding it a 9.5/10, it was one of our highest-rated games ever, perfectly capturing as it does the essence of what makes The 7th Guest such a special game for so many whilst bringing it to the eyes of modern audiences.

A huge boon here for me is that as much as I adored The 7th Guest VR, I struggle with motion sickness when playing in VR, and so it was tough to get through certain sections, and I had to play the game in bite-sized chunks.

Whilst the move from VR does leave the cobwebs of some elements that now feel unneeded – such as the ability to pick up everything and rotate it in your ghostly hand – this realisation of Stauf’s manor and the guests and puzzles within is so strong that it feels fickle to focus on those aspects. As above, if you want to know my personal history with this title and get a deeper dive, check out my previous review of the VR version as it covers a lot of this ground.

Gothic 1 Remake PS5 Review 7.5/10 "A Throwback in the Truest Sense of the Word"

Gothic 1 Remake PS5 Review

Gothic 1 Remake Review – A Gritty, Grubby Triumph with Proper Old‑School Bite

Bugs, Quirks and the Lack of Hand‑Holding

I’ve had many a dalliance with the Gothic series over the years, most recently in 2024, when Gothic 2 was released on Switch. Piranha Bytes very much had their own approach and vibe to their creations, and I was gutted when they closed their doors last year, having given us the Gothic, Risen and Elex series of games. Titles that were definitely flawed, but also idiosyncratic and rich with a dry sense of European humour as well as being unique, memorable experiences for better or worse.

I heard of this Gothic remake a couple of years ago, and I have been yearning for it ever since, and reviewing and scoring this game was oddly difficult because…well, it kind of does what you want/expect a Gothic game to do. Still, there are some design issues and other aspects that are lacking. That said, I fully appreciate that there is a large chunk of fans of the original out there that will embrace this and see it as a genuine GOTY, and I completely understand that viewpoint.

The original Gothic was released in 2001 on PC and is set in and around a penal colony that is under a magic barrier. Nothing living can escape the barrier, and the folks who live within it have split into various groups with their own ways and goals. The remake reflects this main plotline whilst breaking away in terms of the various side quests and its own twists on the design of the original.

Britt’s Mini-Review Round-Up - Loco Motive, Sea of Stars, CyberBlocker 🚂⭐

Mini Review Round‑Up: Three Modern Gems That Celebrate Classic Gaming Vibes

Indie Adventures, JRPG Charm & Arcade Chaos

Quick-fire reviews of Loco Motive, Sea of Stars and CyberBlocker—three modern games packed with charm, style and classic gaming spirit.

Loco Motive (Switch, PC, Mac OS)
Developer – Robust Games
Publisher – Chucklefish
A jazz-laden graphic adventure with an accessible point-and-click interface featuring a quirky cast of characters on an express train during which the murder of a wealthy heiress takes place, Loco Motive is a very fun – and often funny – cartoonish adventure in the classic Lucasarts vein. With top quality voice acting, a glorious visual style, and a classy soundtrack, Loco Motive is a great modern take on a traditional formula that tastefully teases you through a twisting tale of tribulation and treachery whilst travelling on a train.

The Follow Up To A Game I Reviewed 10 Years Ago Is Coming! - Shadows of Eldemir

Shadows of Eldemir

Shadows of Eldemir: Arif Games Resurfaces with a New Cosmic Horror Epic

A Missing Fiancée, a Forbidden Artefact, and a Village on Edge

Back in 2017, one of the first games I ever reviewed for Games Freezer – possibly
the first, come to think of it! – was Arif Games’ Dark Fear, a great horror title that was available on PC and iOS platforms and was awarded our highest accolade of ‘ice cool’. At the end of that article I stated that I was excited for what was to come next from the Yorkshire-based Arif Games…and now, almost a decade later, that moment has arrived!

Details of Shadows of Eldemir are below; information taken from the Arif Games website, the game can be wish-listed on Steam and is due for release in 2027. If their previous work is anything to go by, this will be a beautifully crafted horror adventure dripping with atmosphere and ominous stylings. I for one am keen.

Hollowbody – Rich's Rapid PS5 Review: "British Survival Horror Done Right" #survivalhorror

Hollowbody – The One‑Man Horror Project That Deserves Your Attention

Where Retro Survival Horror Meets Modern Indie Spirit

Hollowbody is a one‑man survival horror project with big Silent Hill energy — atmospheric, tense and proudly British.

In this Rapid Review, Rich dives into its eerie world, clever design choices and the rough edges that come with a solo‑dev passion project. Is it worth your time?

Let’s find out. If you love indie horror, retro vibes and games made with pure graft, this one’s for you.

the story of tim wheatley, zeewolf… and his first game: Blue Fury 🚁 #GameDev #IndieGame

How Zeewolf Inspired Tim Wheatley’s Blue Fury

Indie Game Dev's Procedurally Generated Battlefields That Keep You Guessing

Blue Fury is a helicopter combat game inspired by the golden age of 16‑bit shooters — and it comes straight from the mind of Tim Wheatley.

Drawing on the spirit of classics like Zeewolf, Tim channels that Amiga-era energy into a modern, fast‑paced rescue-and-destruction experience.

Pilot your chopper across procedurally generated terrain, destroy tanks and enemy forces, rescue stranded soldiers, and stop an enemy missile launch before it’s too late.

You’ll need to manage fuel, ammo, and altitude, dodge AA launchers, and engage hostile helicopters while keeping your mission alive.

If you love retro‑inspired action with modern bite, Blue Fury is Tim Wheatley’s tribute to the games that shaped him — and the first step in his own journey as a solo developer.

Postal - Brain Damaged and These Sunny Daze DLC PS5 Review By Mike 5/10

Postal: Brain Damaged – A Flawed, Repetitive Shooter That Somehow Earned My Respect

From Crude Chaos to Unexpected Introspection

I wasn't planning on playing Postal: Brain Damaged. After Postal 4, I had done my tour of duty. I said I'd review it to make the Games Freezer team laugh and then, God help me, I had to play it. I ventured into the wilderness, stared into the abyss and discovered that the abyss occasionally got stuck in doorways and forgot to load its textures.

As far as I was concerned, the Postal series was locked in a 'race to the bottom' cycle of diminishing returns. A relic of a different era when shocking people was enough and a man urinating on strangers could somehow generate national headlines.

Enter Postal: Brain Damaged.

Pengilo PS5 Review 6.5/10 "A Pleasant Penguin Physics Puzzler" 🐧

Pengilo: A Simple Slice of Penguin‑Tossing Puzzle Zen

Verdict: Fun, Floaty, but Not Quite Stand‑Out

A simple and accessible physics-based game from developer Double Mizzlee and publisher Eastasiasoft, Pengilo is a single-screen puzzle title with fifty stages of circular penguin-chucking action.

A bright and colourful entry in the genre presented in 2D, Pengilo tasks the player with tossing a penguin into the air, collecting stars and keys to unlock the door in order to exit each stage.

A budget title that currently costs under a fiver, Pengilo only allows you to take control of your penguin for a follow-up directional shove after a single bounce; this means that you have to be accurate if you don’t want to fall off the screen, resulting in a retry of the stage.

GluMe PS5 Review 8/10 "Let’s Stick Together"

GluMe PS5 Review
GluMe Review – A Charming, Cartoonish Sokoban Puzzle Challenge

Sticky Mechanics, Bright Presentation and 80 Fiendish Single‑Screen Stages

A sliding puzzle game in the Sokoban style. GluMe casts you in the role of a cartoonish blob who must move around the single-screen stages collecting gems by sticking to other blobs in the correct sequence. A single miscalculation means that you won’t be able to complete the stage – which can be but a few seconds long if you know the route! – and requires a restart.

I found the whole approach of GluMe quite appealing. There’s a heavy sense of cartoonishness with the animated blobs having large eyes and gently bouncing around. The chiptune music by Liniker Nasciento is absolutely a perfect match for the breeziness of gameplay and keeps things bright and light to match the visuals.

Clowntown Brings Co‑Op Chaos and Honking Mayhem to Steam – Batterystaple’s New Party Adventure Revealed 🤡

🎪 Clowntown Calls All Jesters to the Ring – Batterystaple’s New Co‑Op Chaos Revealed

The circus is back in town — and this time, it’s packing paintbrushes, skyscrapers, and a honk button. Clowntown, the latest off‑beat creation from 30XX developer Batterystaple Games, made its grand debut at the PC Gaming Show, inviting 2–8 players to embrace their inner fool in a campaign of co‑operative calamity.

🤡 Down to Clown?

Launching soon on PC via Steam, Clowntown is a co‑op party campaign where teamwork, laughter, and mild chaos collide. Players join forces as noble jesters under the watchful eye of the mysterious Ringmaster, tackling over 100 unique minigames and action puzzles designed to make you think, fail, and laugh in equal measure.

From painting masterpieces and constructing skyscrapers to composing cacophonous symphonies, every act of this circus demands creativity and coordination — or at least a convincing attempt.

Clowntown from BatteryStaple
🎨 The Show Must Go On

The main Campaign Mode offers 5–6 hours of hand‑crafted clownery, where friends juggle charades, sabotage, and slapstick teamwork across evolving challenges. Each minigame set grows more absurd as you progress — Face Paint becomes Also Paint, then spirals into Probably Not Paint, turning simple art prompts into time‑pressured chaos.

Wordplay fans can expect escalating madness too: Spelling Bee morphs into Spelling Wasp, and finally Bees Spelling, where clowns literally chase letters with wings.

🎉 Party Mode: Co‑Op or Contest

Between campaign sessions, Clowntown’s Party Mode lets players pick curated or randomised minigame sets, tweak difficulty, and add mutators. Feeling competitive? Flip the script in Contest Mode, where co‑op turns cutthroat, and every clown fights for solo glory.

And yes — every mode includes a dedicated honk button. You can customise the sound. Your teammates cannot mute it.

Clowntown from BatteryStaple

🌍 Global Circus

Clowntown will launch with full support for English, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, German, Korean, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Follow Batterystaple Games on Bluesky or X for updates, and watch the Clowntown reveal trailer now to see the mayhem unfold.

Clowntown looks set to be the next big indie laugh riot friend slop game — a perfect blend of teamwork, absurdity, and honking chaos.

God of Weapons PS5 Review 6/10 "Ambitious but Fatiguing Over Time" ⚔️ @ArchmageGames #IndieGame #GameDev

God of Weapons PS5 Review
God of Weapons – 3D Vampire Survivors‑Style Action with Inventory Management Depth

Verdict – Ambitious but Fatiguing Over Time

A game that takes inspiration from poncle’s Vampire Survivors and moves the game into the 3D realm whilst also adding in some inventory management action, God of Weapons has some nice ideas, but the inherent repetition of the auto-battler genre is amplified here by short music loops and a staid environment.

A game that takes place in single-stage chunks, God of Weapons shows you at the start just how much content there is here, as the myriad unlockable characters are shown in silhouette before you dive into the main tower that makes up the heart of the game. As you proceed, you’ll also unlock a pretty chunky weapons armoury in which you can delve to select which loadout you fancy at the time, of course…keeping that aforementioned inventory space in check.

The stages are all very similar visually, differing mainly in enemy type and level size, although the mechanics are mainly the same, albeit having to perhaps dodge spike traps etc. You have to survive for between one and two minutes on the stages as insurmountable monsters spawn around you, causing you to run and dash out of their way as your weapons and spells auto-fire quite satisfyingly.

In A.I.L.A, you play as a video game play-tester in a postmodern sci-fi world. You get the new VR gaming system- AILA. It is a brand-new system that uses the user’s psyche to adapt the horror and give a unique experience.

The system uses an AI to guide you through the horror scenarios, the avatar of which is a little girl whom you talk to before and after you play through each of the scenarios, asking questions and guiding you through the experience, checking how you react and how you feel.

Games Freezer's Favourite YouTube Channels - #3 Rich 📼

Over the coming weeks, the team here at GF will be sharing their favourite gaming channels on YouTube.

Here are the channels that Rich keeps returning to!

These channels represent everything I love about gaming culture: authenticity, humour, and deep‑cut passion.

Any Austin

Any Austin’s thoughtful storytelling and creative lens remind me why games matter beyond mechanics. This guy puts so much effort into dissecting things that most wouldn't even think of.

Games Freezer’s favourite YouTube Channels #2 Britt 📼

Over the coming weeks, the team here at GF will be sharing their favourite gaming channels on YouTube.

Here are the channels that Britt keeps returning to!

Kim Justice

The channel I’ve probably been watching for the longest period of time, Kim’s passion for gaming bleeds through the screen, and it’s always a genuine pleasure to sit down with a glass of wine and plough through her lengthy docs, especially the ones with a focus on the 8-bit microcomputers. An awesome documentarian who really knows her stuff!
