Having followed them for a while on Twitter via my @kingdomofcarts account, I was really intrigued when I caught a sniff of their monthly subscription idea and, after receiving samples through the post recently, it’s definitely a service that would benefit a lot of people, especially those starting off a collection or perhaps fancy dipping into gaming of a more retro nature.

The presentation of the boxes is quite nice (they are too big and saucy for letterboxes (good) which is something to note) and the Sore Thumb logo emblazoned on the front lets you know that it’s time for some gaming gold when they arrive.

The example boxes I received comprised of two Master System games, one Mega Drive title and four PS3 games, I was actually pretty lucky with the selection of games I was sent as only one of them (Sonic 2) was a duplicate that was already in my collection. Although admittedly, Mega Drive is the main system that I pick up games for. If you already have a substantial collection, there’s a high chance you’ll get duplicates and, whilst Sore Thumb states that they will send another box free of charge, I assume that this applies to the duplicates of games they send as opposed to duplicates already in your collection.

Below are some pictures of the boxes I received as well as the bonus sweets that were swiftly gobbled.

The games were in good condition, although manuals weren’t included in some of the Master System games. Again, if you are a ‘CIB’ kind of person, you may need to contact Sore Thumb in advance to perhaps cater for this, if possible.

The different types of boxes, along with current prices are included below, obviously, you can choose multiples if you so wish:

Sega Master System - £18.95 / month, £193.29 / year

Sega Mega Drive – £18.95 / month, £193.29 / year

Sony PS1 - £17.95 / month, £183.09 / year

Sony PS2 - £16.95 / month, £172.89 / year

Sony PS3 - £16.95 / month, £172.89 / year

Microsoft XBOX - £16.95 / month, £172.89 / year

Microsoft XBOX 360 - £16.95 / month, £172.89 / year

For this, you receive 3-5 games each month and the savings work out as:

 3 months – 5%

6 months – 10%

12 months – 15%.

Boxes are shipped on the 10th of each month and delivery is included in the price.

In summary, these Sore Thumb Retro Games subscription boxes are a really cool idea. If you like the thought of kicking off a collection or dipping your toe into some retro action, I recommend this as a place to start, getting random games in the post will always be fun and, unless you have a vast collection of each of these systems, they are good value for money.

Based on the example boxes I received, I worked out that I could get the PS3 titles sent for a slightly lower price by scouting around (although they would all be posted separately from different sources and in various conditions) but the Master System / Mega Drive games were excellent value.

Well-boxed and with a speedy delivery service, the Sore Thumb Retro Games subscription service is a fun, fair and enticing prospect as well as making a great gift idea.

Which box would you sign up for? Me?…I’m thinking Master System due to my currently flimsy collection ;)
