A key part of any working or gaming day is the trusty keyboard. I’ve used dozens in my time, and a keyboard that isn’t up to scratch can affect everything, from constant typos to missed opportunities in myriad games – plus, using a keyboard that doesn’t feel right just removes the fun and flow from whatever it is that you are doing.

This is the first ROCCAT keyboard that I’ve covered on GF, and it makes a great impression right out of the box. The build quality feels solid and yet not bulky, and the rubber grips on the base and stand really lock onto the surface, ensuring that there’s no slipping.

Also included is a plastic, ridged wrist-rest, which comes in handy as the Magma does feel quite high when typing without it. The tactile sense of the keys themselves is also a high point, there’s a swiftness to use that meant I felt much more confident than on my previous RGB keyboard, on which I always seemed to be missing characters and generally being much more staccato in my typing and accuracy, which was irritating.

The lighting system really ticked my boxes, the design shows lit gaps between - and through - keys and gives the impression that the keys themselves are floating when viewed from an angle, adding to that breezy overall design sensibility. The proprietary ROCCAT Swarm software that allows you to make changes is also easy to use and gives not only practical options such as altering the brightness and style of the backlighting as well as keymapping – but also allows you to set the noise and volume of typing feedback with included sound effects.

Personally, I like the relative silence of this membrane keyboard, but it’s a fun option should you wish to use it, although I’m not sure how many people the typewriter/laser beam/sci-fi sound effects would appeal to. There is also an included ‘game mode’ that automatically knocks off some shortcuts and key patterns that can interfere with your gaming, this is tied to the scroll lock button via the function key, which is a nice touch.

At its price point, the ROCCAT Magma gives solid build quality, calming, effective (and very cool)  lighting and a degree of personalisation as well as being composed of materials that give confidence to what you are using the keyboard for.
