Surrounded by a blaze of bullets and headless zombies marching along the bottom of the screen Cotton Reboot could be mistaken for a fever dream quite easily as it throws everything at you in a colourful explosion of mayhem and madness interspersed with some non-sensical cut scenes about willow candy...

It's a bullet-hell shoot 'em up that feels more like bullet madness and I think I love it.

The joy began when I hooked my Switch up to a 65-inch tv and played the game at full blast and had a whale of a time in Arrange Mode and Time Attack mode.

The glory of the beautiful graphics are a joy to behold and the screenshots that I saw in the press pack don't do them justice. You have to play this game to truly enjoy its pixel-perfect beauty and also its' perfectly arranged musical score which propels you along this bright and breezy but oh so fiendish video game of skill, luck and bullet hell tactics.

I'm not generally a fan of shoot 'em ups but when one comes along as beautiful and as fun as this is to play then that's when I sit up and take notice.

There's a nice arrangement of modes to play and I had my fun mainly with the Arrange Mode which is pretty much the story mode and has the arcade port baked into it which has been enhanced to a 16:9 widescreen ratio which is why it looks so stunning when on a nice big TV.

On the other hand, the time attack mode gives you a specially prepared stage that you will need to attack and get a high score within the timer of 2 or 5 minutes. Your score is then uploaded to the global leaderboards which is a great touch and lets you strive to break into the Cotton Reboot Elite!

There's also a Sharp X68000 version that has been ported onto this Switch package that is good for nostalgia but does only seem to serve as a reminder that the arcade version is an absolute beauty compared to the X68000 version. It plays a nice game but after playing the arcade version you probably won't get much out of the X68000 version.

The enjoyment from this game for me comes in the form of the thrilling arcade playstyle as you saddle up on your broom and create destruction amongst the undead creatures of the night all in the name of willow candy. I also really enjoyed how your fairy accomplice adds weight to your attacks and the attacks seem to get stronger and more spectacular as you go along collecting crystals.

There's no denying that for me this game was very hard but unlimited continues to allow you to progress consistently even if you're as crap at shoot 'em ups as I am! I can only imagine how much Yen that this arcade game must have swallowed up when unsuspecting kids threw their pocket money into this coin guzzler of a marvel!

Right, I'm off to hop on my broom, eat some Willow and shoot a giant skeleton in the eye sockets!
