Wonder Boy Anniversary Collection Nintendo Switch Review 8/10 "A Wonderful collection of Wonder Boy Titles" πŸ›ΉπŸŒ΄@BrittRecluseuk

The Wonder Boy series of games is something that I’ve enjoyed since a friend introduced me to them back in the late ‘80s.

Whilst the action/RPG  entries are what really stick with me, it’s quite astonishing how well the original game holds up as a high-score arcade classic; not to mention the co-op goodness of Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair.

It’s a great string of games that yo-yos between genres, with each one standing strong. There is a wealth of options here as well, from the ability to fast-forward and rewind the game, to save states – there’s even the ability to check out full, scrolling maps of each stage/section.

Combine this with a small gallery of artwork, and it does seem like this is the definitive way to enjoy these games, especially in terms of customisation and accessibility. It’s interesting when you compare the different versions of each game and note the changes and differences in each system, something I’m sure that the uber Wonder Boy fans will get hips deep into – that said, most casual players will probably choose the system version that is either the most nostalgic for them or looks the best, and it’s here that my only real criticism comes.

Currently, the Wonder Boy Anniversary Collection is £45 on the UK Nintendo shop, which seems quite steep – before checking up on the price, I had assumed that it would be £20-£25, so the price tag did shock me somewhat. Aside from that though, there really is a lot to enjoy in this tasty collection of games.

With 21 versions of 6 Wonder Boy games (Wonder Boy, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair, Monster World II, Monster World III, and Monster World IV), and a wealth of customisation options, The Wonder Boy Anniversary Collection feels the definitive way to enjoy Wonder Boy’s adventures.
