Mini Review Round‑Up: Three Modern Gems That Celebrate Classic Gaming Vibes

Indie Adventures, JRPG Charm & Arcade Chaos

Quick-fire reviews of Loco Motive, Sea of Stars and CyberBlocker—three modern games packed with charm, style and classic gaming spirit.

Loco Motive (Switch, PC, Mac OS)
Developer – Robust Games
Publisher – Chucklefish
A jazz-laden graphic adventure with an accessible point-and-click interface featuring a quirky cast of characters on an express train during which the murder of a wealthy heiress takes place, Loco Motive is a very fun – and often funny – cartoonish adventure in the classic Lucasarts vein. With top quality voice acting, a glorious visual style, and a classy soundtrack, Loco Motive is a great modern take on a traditional formula that tastefully teases you through a twisting tale of tribulation and treachery whilst travelling on a train.

Sea of Stars (Switch 1&2, PlayStation 4&5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC, Mobile)

Developer / Publisher – Sabotage Studio
A beautiful RPG featuring turn-based combat, Sea of Stars is again a modern title that leans on traditional mechanics and narrative to bring the game world to life. Focused on two children who were taken from their village and cooped away on a training academy in the clouds to begin their training as Solstice Warriors and featuring music by genre veteran Yasunori Mitsuda, Seas of Stars is a recommendation for fans of the Chrono series of games, as it is a smooth and well-designed title in the JRPG genre that shines both visually and aurally. Whilst the narrative and mechanics may be a little too traditional for some, that accessibility is also a strength, and fits in perfectly with Sea of Stars’ vibe and approach.

CyberBlocker (PC, Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5)

Developer – KT. Software
Originally released on PC in 2022, CyberBlocker has now made its way to consoles and is a very souped-up anime take on the Arkanoid style. Pulse-pounding music and explosions of colour are the order of the day here, as you smash your way to victory, collecting power-ups and working your way up the online leaderboards. This is a game not for the faint of heart, as the game ramps up and quickly becomes intense, with a lot going on on-screen, meaning that you need keen reflexes to succeed!
