I have to admit to covering Hole Digging Master out of sheer curiosity, the premise seemed somewhat bland, but hey – Fishing Vacation was awesome! There was also the fact that the trailer promises mysteries and treasures, tied to relaxing gameplay...good.

Hole Digging Master begins with a swift tutorial that introduces the game mechanics and core loop, that is – you dig, you sell, you upgrade...you dig. Played out entirely in POV, Hole Digging Master takes place entirely in a garage and the nearby garden, with a large square marked out on the grass, and the surrounding paraphernalia suggesting that the reason for digging – initially, at least! - is to get a swimming pool on the go. And so you grab your – erm – battery-powered shovel, and get to work.

A few things will then quickly become apparent, you lose health if you fall too far – but don’t worry, you have a jetpack - and also your inventory will fill up pretty sharpish as you collect precious ore and stones.

Your battery depletes through digging and flying, requiring re-charging in the garage, which – along with the upgrades – cost money. Money can be earned through selling your plunder, with deeper excavations naturally being more rewarding, eventually allowing you to unlock quicker, more powerful tools which which to weave your way through the earth.

As you put your shovel to the test, hurling dynamite around (whilst trying to not smash your own subterranean lighting system), you’ll be accompanied by some jaunty music as well as more atmospheric sounds; the silent, coldness of the audio during the deeper sections pairing well with the music when above your labours.

With such a simple premise, I found myself returning to Hole Digging Master frequently, and being only a few hours long, I completed the game long before my patience wore thin, leaving me wanting more and even now, I’m ‘chipping away’ at the final collectibles.

SUMMARY
With solid – if a little ‘assety’ – visuals, a mostly smooth 30fps, tight controls, and a bizarrely magnetising pull in the straight ‘n simple gameplay, Hole Digging Master is a short and snappy little game that provides some satisfying uber-gardening action, I genuinely already hope there’s a sequel in the works!
8/10
