Tiny Pixels Vol. 2 – Stormy Knights Review

A snappy, heavily timing-based adventure game that casts you in the role of a knight on a quest to rescue several princess trapped in separate castles, you’ll find yourself adjusting to the simple control setup quickly, and timing your movements, shield blocks, dashes, swipes and magic accordingly as you cut your way through the enemies ahead of you, in single-stage battles.

With colourful pixel visuals and a focus on efficiency, Stormy Knights is a game in which you will die quite a few times before reaching the end, even if that end is only an hour or two away. Precision and timing are key as you work out enemy patterns and routines, before taking down the boss of each castle.

After each battle, your character travels to the next section by zipping through the interconnecting corridor – and wall - allowing you to pick up coins en route via a simple mini-game. In-between runs, you can spend these coins on upgrading one of three skill trees that provide boons such as extra damage, more magic attacks and rewards for each princess rescued, these don’t take too many runs to fully unlock, and – as with my recent Kiborg review – feel like they genuinely make a difference to the game and aren’t overly incremental.

Whilst Stormy Knights has appealing visuals, tight controls, a pleasingly simple premise, and music that suits the ambience – after a while the rigid structure of the game, and minor variances in how each battle plays out wore me down a little and even though this is a short game, I feel like my patience had worn out by the time I approached the endgame.

SUMMARY
A decent little title to dip in and out of in short bursts, but it does feel like it needs more variation or depth to get the most out of the premise.
