A dungeon-crawling trivia card game where you & your friends must use video game knowledge to slay monsters & escape the dreaded trivia dungeon!
We at GF have been big fans of the folks at Lost In Cult for some time, as they’ve consistently shown how hips deep they are in the high quality releases that they’ve been part of over the years since their inception in 2021, with a special shout out to Ryan Brown, who is an incredibly passionate individual that I’ve known since my ‘Kingdomofcarts’ days (may they rise again).
Speaking of Kingdomofcarts, we released a quiz book several years ago, as we love both trivia and gaming – natch – and aside from the pretty standard basic question/answer card games that are kicking around, there was very little out there that combined the mechanics of RPG gaming itself with trivia – and CAPCOM’s Quiz and Dragons is showing its age a tad (although oddly, the recently released Jackbox 11 contains a game titled ‘Legends of Trivia’ that does this, albeit using trivia genres outside of video gaming itself, yet it’s still awesome fun, and a clear highlight of that Jackbox pack) and so the chance to dive into a card game that does this very thing is saucy, trouser-removingly saucy.
Do You Know Gaming (the game) is based on a gaming trivia website created by Shane Gill in 2012. Inside the standard edition box you’ll find:
- 223 Tarot sized cards
- 240 Playing sized cards
- Rulebook
- Counters
- Whilst the other, more deluxe boxes contain extras
A dungeon-crawler that sees your players (between 1-4 intrepid adventurers!) taking on enemies, collecting items and equipment, and eventually tackling a boss in order to finally leave this brain-teasing trivia dungeon! The first thing that struck me was the heft of the box, and the incredible artwork by Belfast-based illustrator Stephen Maurice Graham.
The tone of the game is very much tongue-in-cheek, poking fun at figures at everything from incessant YouTube commenters and keyboard warriors to cheaters and various other archetypes of the gaming universe, as well as celebrating the vast history of gaming, all the while conjuring up wacky monsters to best in mortal, knowledge-based combat. The cards are all of high quality and the descriptions, artwork and style are all completely on point.
The way the game fundamentally works is in allowing you to choose from a pool of characters – each with their own ‘difficulty setting’ dictated by how much health they have, any bonuses, and the amount of items they can carry in their inventory, this is a great way of balancing out the game should the players involved have differing levels of knowledge. Upon defeating enemies, you can get loot, which consists of gear and consumables – and ultimately, relics. You need three relics in order to raise the final boss, which you then have to pulverise with perspicacity to win the game.
The game is very easy to dive into, and the included instructions are really well laid out and simple to digest and follow. The heart of the game of course is in the questions, allowing you to choose between easy, medium, or hard – with each raised level of difficulty offering extra damage against your chosen foe – unless of course, you (or your fellow players) have cards
that will assist / scupper your plans….like my fiancΓ©e did, when she initiated a trade and promptly revealed a card that ensured that she kept both items, laughing in my face...she went on to win the game.
Whilst all of the action is trivia based, it’s not just straightforward questions, with true/false, multiple choice, and critical hit chance cards also being randomly plucked through play to spice things up.
We had a great deal of fun with Do You Know Gaming? And I intend to for some time to come, it’s an incredibly simple game to dive into and the in-built mechanics and character choices ensure that you can balance the game to the enjoyment levels of the players involved.
The creators are also fully on-board with the prospect of modding, and I intend to use our quiz book as a kind of expansion pack down the line, but quite frankly, we love the game so much that I would be all over any official expansions in the pipeline, as I’d love for this to become a long-running series, blending so wonderfully as it does dungeon-crawling, gaming trivia, glorious artwork, and a pervading sense of fun.
Right, I’ll see you in the dungeon!
