It seems strange to be writing a preview of a game that is released but, as the game takes 400 days (real-time) to complete, it felt the only way to proceed.

The game begins with an underground giant king creating your character (the Shade) from the palm of his hand and tasking you to watch over him for 400 days as he sleeps.

Following this, he promptly drops off and you are left to your own devices, wandering the labyrinthine caves and rooms that make up ‘The Kingdom’ and listening to him gently snoring.

In Skul, you play as an adorably drawn pixel art skeleton called Skul who is tasked with saving the day by avenging the evil invasion of the King's castle. Skul takes on the Imperial Army and attempts to rescue his King from captivity in this rogue-lite 2D platformer.

Terratech is an open-world vehicular construction and combat game from Payload Studios, a colourful and surprisingly accessible game that plays out as a mix of Hard truck Apocalypse and digital Meccano.

Although Tanzia is a game that initially charms with its cute characters, vibrant colours, joyful sound track and strong introduction sequence, the actual playing of the game feels like a HD re-master of a PS2 game with floaty, weightless controls and repetitive game play that unfortunately takes away too much  fun from the title to make it a recommended purchase.

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of adventure games in all forms, having enjoyed the genre over the last thirty years, sometimes a newly released game can be truly great but the tired reliance on illogical ‘use item on  other item’ puzzles and pixel-hunting can too often cloud over great writing and sumptuous, hand-drawn artwork.

Some of my favourite moments in video games have come from wandering off the beaten track with a few scraps in my inventory, looking through bins for a few bullets or food to eat. 

There’s something about those scrappy early stages of games such as Fallout that gets lost in the later game when you are wielding laser Gatling guns with companions made of golden sunlight, one-hit killing everything in your path with thousands in the bank. 

Those moments when you don’t know if you’ll survive the next attack or even if you’ll stave of starvation long enough to die in the fight in the first place!

I feel ill-equipped to preview Caves of Qud (COQ) because the only other pure roguelike game that I’ve played in any real depth was Ancient Domains of Mystery, a few months ago (A game that I found to be more initially accessible than Caves of Qud) and I’m glad I did, because compared to this game, ADOM was a breeze.

The Beast Inside is based around the premise of a young man returning to his family home with his wife. Intending to make a living out in this rustic farmhouse, the game begins with the arrival of the couple at the estate.

An intriguing game with distinctive visuals and depth but the clunky, simplistic combat and finicky menus could be an issue.

The story that drives Soulblight tells of a tree of life guarded by man, but increasingly buried away behind concrete and towers as time passes by, resulting in its wilting. 

Soon, a darkness ravages the land, leaving your character as the last hope to bring light to the waning lands .

I had never heard of Die Young before reviewing it for review, but as it was installing I was reading up on the comparisons to Rust and The Forest etc. which made me narrow my eyes a bit. 

I have no issue with the survival adventure genre but it’s not something that I actively seek out. Whilst I can see the appeal of knocking up a log cabin with picket fence surround and a herb garden whilst nightly fighting off randomly spawning cannibals, it just isn’t for me. 

Die Young takes a different approach which immediately made me sit up and pay attention.

Lust for Darkness is to be the last ever video game released through Steam Greenlight. Developed by Movie Games, a Polish studio, it is a first-person horror that takes place in two different realms thanks to the machinations of a mysterious cult. Dragged into this is a man looking for his wife, who went missing over a year ago in very mysterious circumstances.
