Video Game Lo-Fi: Jazz Hop Standards Vinyl Review

The latest entry that we’ve received here at GF HQ in the Video Game Lo-Fi series from Curaga Records, Jazz Hop Standards is a different beast to other entries in that it features more of a collaborative effort, heavier involvement of acoustic instrumentation, and in a more tangible sense – a full size, four-page booklet that gives background and context to the music, a welcome involvement that enriches the listening experience.

Persona 5 Tactica Nintendo Switch Review 8.5/10 “Let me in your heart again” 👦👧 @Atlus_West #Persona5 @TransvaalGF

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On

I have a very strong attachment to Persona 5, it was released at a time that I would comfortably describe as one of the worst periods of my life. Everything had fallen apart, and for a while, everything seemed a bit hopeless.

Luckily, I have been a huge fan of Persona and the Megami Tensei series as a whole since the PlayStation 2 era, so, just as everything seemed bleak - enter Persona 5, a game I had pre-ordered the special edition for, and it made me feel good. I spent 128 hours playing it with nothing but joy in my heart, it was the thing I needed - it wasn't just a distraction, it really felt like an old friend, and the story and the cast of characters really resonated with me, so every time this universe gets expanded, I’m always hopeful that special feeling will still be there.

Golfinite Nintendo Switch Review 7.5/10 "A surprisingly moreish golf title" 🏌️‍♂️⛳️ #IndieGame #GameDev @pmurph0305

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On

As a keen – and yet impressively dreadful – amateur golfer, I’m always on the lookout for new golf titles to get me swingin’. Golfinite takes an interesting approach, in having a lot of depth to tuck into with the full array of clubs and shot styles available, as well as wind conditions and environmental hazards – the usual elements of golf games – but also taking a lighter approach in some of the wackier hazards that can get in your way, and the arcade-like power-ups that you can purchase with earned coins. These additions allow you to craft a playstyle that suits you, whether it be a ‘straighter’ style of plain golf, or more colourful and fun, which is a nice touch.

Terrorbytes The Evolution Of Horror Gaming 🔪🎮

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On

Richard Moss is the writer and director of the upcoming five-part documentary series TerrorBytes: The Evolution of Horror Gaming, which will celebrate and explore the rich, thrilling history of horror gaming of the past 40+ years. We reviewed the previous film FPS: First Person Shooter, which Richard co-wrote.

Terrorbytes are announcing three new cast members today, to add to the 35 previously confirmed. Namely:

  • Denis Dyack, the director of beloved 2002 GameCube title Eternal Darkness and 1996 action RPG Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain
  • Sam Barlow, the director of FMV games Immortality and Her Story as well as writer/designer on Silent Hill: Origins and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
  • Yoshiro Kimura, the mind behind cult-favourite horror game Rule of Rose, which was caught up in a moral panic in several countries for purported (and non-existent) sadomasochism and underage eroticism — resulting in its release being cancelled in the UK and Australia.

Other confirmed interviews for TerrorBytes include:

Roberta Williams (Phantasmagoria), Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill composer), Hifumi Kouno (Clock Tower), Hubert Chardot (Alone in the Dark), Thomas Grip (SOMAAmnesiaPenumbra), Mary Kenney (The Walking Dead: The Final Season), Mathieu Coté (Dead By Daylight), Jeremy Blaustein (Silent Hill 2-4), Ben Leffler (Exmortis), and Abby and Tony Howard (Slay The Princess).

TerrorBytes is currently in a pre-sales campaign to help cover the costs of production.

Available tiers include both digital and physical editions as well as a range of exclusive limited-run physical merchandise. Supporters will also gain access to 15+ hours of exclusive live events over the next year, ahead of the documentary’s release in March/April 2025.

Horror fans can learn more about TerrorBytes and join the experience at terrorbytesdoc.com.

C64: Polish Pixels in Video Games is a coffee-table style book where the author, Krzysiek Augustyn, invites readers on an extraordinary visual journey through Polish games developed for the Commodore 64 computer, spanning from the 1980s to today. Yes, the C64 is still alive thanks to its creators! The descriptions of these productions are adorned with exclusive interviews, photographs, trivia, and stories from the developers.

Jump into the rad world of the Commodore 64. It's way more than a look-back – it's a lively story that high-fives the trailblazing Polish C64 game makers and the awesome demoscene crew.

Get ready for a deep dive into the cool and creative world that popped up during some pretty intense times. You'll get to check out the Polish games that rocked the world's best-selling computer. Plus, we're digging into the C64 demoscene – those art and coding wizards who are now a proud part of Poland's cultural scene, thanks to UNESCO.

We're talking about the hurdles faced by legends like California Dreams, and giving you the scoop on epic games like Blockout and Street Rod. Each page is crammed with eye-popping visuals and stories.

And it's not just about the games. We're sharing the real-deal stories from the peeps who were there, showing how these adventures shaped their lives.
"I'm proud that Movie Games can support such brilliant initiatives. The preservation of video games is a topic very close to my heart, as it should be for all gamers and video game fans," says Piotr Gnyp, Movie Games CMO.
And who is the author? Let him introduce himself!
Hey there! I'm Krzysiek, but you can call me Chris. I'm stoked to bring you along on my C64 journey with this book. Born in the late 70s in Gliwice, Poland, my love for computers kicked off early and just never stopped.

Been in the C64 scene since the early 90s. It wasn't just about playing games; it was about being part of a crew that was all about pushing what these cool 8-bit machines could do. I didn't just play games; I made them. Yep, I coded six games for the C64 and even founded the Inflexion Development team, known for some top-notch Polish games in the 90s.

Coding's not just a job for me; it's what gets me up in the morning. This led me to run one of Poland's biggest electronic entertainment websites, Virtual Poland / Games Empire, from 2006 to 2010. Got to really dive into the gaming world there.

I also started PolishPixels, a site all about retro gaming, and co-created the GameStory TV series, bringing classic video game stories to life. It's been a wild ride, reliving and sharing these epic game tales that have shaped so much of our culture.

This book? It's my way of taking you back to the golden days of the C64, shining a light on the awesome Polish side of the story that not everyone knows about.
Preorder the book by backing it up and get a free Movie Games title with your pledge!

Rising Lords Review 6/10 "Medieval Mediocrity" ⚔️🛡️ #IndieGame #GameDev @argonwood

Rising Lords Review

Life in medieval times was tough. The local lord or royal type wouldn’t think twice about forcing peasants to work for 28 hours a day in the fields, before sticking a spear in their hand and making them go and stab a peasant from a neighbouring village. All in the name of expanding the fiefdom and extending the empire of their glorious leader.

And Rising Lords lets you be that ‘benevolent’ ruler. This game has been loitering on PC for a few years, going through lengthy development stages before launching on consoles in its current form. A form honed and perfected to be a sleek mix of Risk-style battles and Civilisation-esque resource management, right? Right?

Wrong. Sadly.

Sims 4: Home Chef Hustle Pack Review 8/10 "This pack is well worth the investment" 🏡🍔

If you are an avid fan of The Sims, you might be interested in reading my review of the Home Chef Hustle pack. As someone who has spent countless hours in the Sims series, I am always eager to try out new games or stuff packs as soon as they are released.

This pack caught my attention because I felt that The Sims lacked in the cooking department, and I was curious to see how this pack would address that issue.

One of the most exciting features of this pack is the small gameplay element that allows you to run your own food stall. This feature adds a new level of interactivity to the game, and it was a lot of fun to experiment with different recipes and see how they would sell. The pack also comes with a range of new cooking equipment, including a pizza oven, a mixing bowl, and a waffle maker, which are great additions to the game.

Sinden Lightgun Review "As I felt it’s heft as I lifted it out of the box, I simply muttered, “yes” 💥 @SindenLightgun #Retrogaming

Sinden Lightgun Review

As a collector of video games – as well as a reviewer of them – in my 40’s, I’ve seen a lot of genres come and go, get a new lease of life, get revisited, outmoded, souped-up, etc. and the one genre that burns me to the core most of all, seemingly swept aside by technological issues and the passage of time – is the lightgun genre.

Whether you were introduced to the genre through Duck Hunt on the NES, Point Blank on the PS1, House of the Dead on the Dreamcast, or Silent Scope, LA Machineguns, Time Crisis, or Beastbusters in the arcade, the chances are that you have some pretty strong memories bouncing around your noggin that involve that most shooty-shootiest of gaming genres (I also just remembered the Toejam and Earl Menacer game! What a multi-cart that was!), and they are fading away into the most distant past, as CRT TVs become harder and harder to get.

Quite frankly, unless you are a collector of video games and accessories from a bygone era, the most recent recollections that you’ll have would be of fiddling about with the incredibly tediously thin cable that came with the Nintendo Wii sensor as you tried to get it balanced on top of your TV without knocking it off,  yanking the cord out of the delicate sensor, or just strangling yourself to death out of sheer frustration – which often seemed the most practical option.

Spanish indie geniuses Deconstructeam have been pushing the boundaries of video game narrative for over a decade with beautiful, thought-provoking games like The Red Strings Club and their latest opus, The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood.

But now the Valencian studio is offering its thirstiest fans a new way to connect with them and their work—physically rather than metaphysically, in whichever orifice they desire.

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, Deconstructeam have teamed up with artisan sex toy company Uberrime to launch a real-life, functional dildo inspired by the godlike girth of Abramar, the forbidden behemoth.

The result is a body-safe silicone monster cock suitable for only the most wicked of exiled witches. Three lucky Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood fans will have the chance to win one and wield the awesome power of Abramar in the bedroom—as well as DIY tarot card kits to craft their own fate-divining decks.

Visit daddyabramar.com for information about how to enter, contest rules, and some dazzling photos of the hand-crafted cock in question.

Metal Slug 4 Original Soundtrack Vinyl Review "I was first introduced to Metal Slug in the back of a dingy record store" 💿 #Vinyl #VideoGameVinyl #VGM

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On

Since the first release in 1996, the Metal Slug series was a long-time staple in arcades over the world. I was first introduced to Metal Slug in the back of a dingy record store (Rainbow Records) in my hometown of Pontypridd, it was one of three cabinets at the back of the shop (the other two were Aliens and Power Drift, if memory serves), and I was instantly hooked on the high-octane action that the game delivered with it’s intense militaristic soundtrack, colourful visuals and zany animations (I’ve always loved the Metal Slug reload animation) – even the in-game slowdown added an oddly cinematic quality to the experience, and made it feel like you were causing so much on-screen carnage and havoc that the game was struggling to keep up with you, good! It’s a series to which I often return, usually when visiting arcades scattered around the UK, as a blast on a Metal Slug title – especially with friends - always brings back great memories.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden Xbox Series X Review 9/10 "A wonderfully spun tale of love and grief" ⚔️ @DONTNOD_Ent #IndieGame #GameDev

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On

I’ve been hankering for an RPG to sink my teeth into, and when Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden arrived at GF HQ, I was keen to tuck in and get a few dozen hours of adventuring under my belt. What I didn’t expect was to get sucked into the world of Red and Antea so deeply, and so quickly.

Set during the settling of America in the 1600’s, the game begins with Banishers (effectively mercenaries that deal with hauntings) Red and Antea arriving on boat to New Eden - a small settlement near Boston - having received word from their friend Charles that their ghost handling skills are required in this fledging town.

The Monty Mole Collection Nintendo Switch Review
The 8-bit home computing platforming scene is something of a golden era to a lot of people. Filled with extremely challenging games, great music, and a very ‘British’ sense of humour (and social commentary).

Whilst I have played Monty Mole - many years ago - I associate the games more with Rob Hubbard’s astonishing score than the gameplay itself, and so I was keen to delve into this collection and experience them for the first time, on a modern system.
