When I originally played Oxenfree on my Nintendo Switch I was late to the party and managed to buy it during a Switch games sale due to a recommendation on a Podcast I listen to. I really enjoyed the first Oxenfree and I especially fell for the radio-based supernatural story that had me guessing all the way.

This time around I got Oxenfree 2 on my mobile phone via the Netflix Games part of the Netflix mobile app. I was impressed that it was there and couldn't resist the opportunity to go back to the world of Oxenfree for more transistor radio high jinks!

Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals feels like it is a worthy sequel to the beloved original indie adventure game Oxenfree and it also expands on the original game's strengths, whilst also introducing some neat new ideas to the formula.

The Ox 2 story picks up a few years after the events of the first game. You play as Riley who is from the Island of Camena and now after bouncing around from job to job she's back on the island as a newly recruited environmental researcher. She's been deployed to Camena to investigate a series of mysterious radio transmissions, and she soon finds herself caught up in a new supernatural mystery involving transmitters, time tears, exploration and plenty of dialogue.

The writing in Oxenfree 2 is top-notch. The characters are well-developed and believable, and the dialogue is sharp and witty. The voice acting is also excellent and really draws you into the characters and the story so that you care about what happens to them as you step through the narrative.

The gameplay is very similar to the first game but with some new variations on the theme. You will get to do some light exploration of the environment, solve fairly straightforward puzzles, and interact with other NPCs using the dialogue bubble system. But now you can also use some empathic abilities to read the minds of other characters. This adds a new layer of complexity to the gameplay, and it helps you to better understand the characters and the story.

Oxenfree 2 is a simple but beautiful game. The visuals are neat and fit well with the aesthetic, and the music and effects are both atmospheric and haunting. The game is also full of Easter eggs and references to the first Oxenfree game, which will be appreciated by fans of the original.

SUMMARY

Overall, Oxenfree 2 is a solid sequel that plays very similar to the original. It's a definite must-play for fans of the first game and's a great choice for anyone looking for a well-written and atmospheric narrative-led adventure/walking sim-style game.
