Moto Roader was originally released in 1989 as a futuristic racing game developed by NCS for the PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16.

Since then it has been ported over to the Wii and Wii U Virtual Consoles. Now in the year of video games 2022, we have a port that is hitting Xbox, Switch, PS4 and PS5.

This racer game is a classic and pretty basic top-down one screen retro racing game in the mould of Super Off-Road but with vehicular combat thrown in to spice up the game a bit.

The package you get is a pretty basic port over to the current-gen consoles with a few options for Shaders, Save States and rewind functionality. It's only around £5.99 in the various eShops so the price does seem to fit the package contents.

When you start racing you will immediately see the Super Off-Road similarities except without the massive undulations in the track and also without the scantily clad '80s track girls. Moto Roader MC is more of a top-down F-Zero type game with boost arrows, rocket launchers and chaos inducing bombs.

The problem I had from the start though was that the racing was far too hectic. This madness was further enhanced by the fact that the 'RUN' button is actually the brak/reverse button, so for the first 3 races, I was constantly starting the race by reversing down the track whilst the opposition were sprinting off the line and blowing each other to smithereens!.

One wrong move in this game and you're either facing the wrong way down the track or being blown to bits by the CPU racers who don't seem to suffer too much from being blown to bits. Whereas if I was taking hits then no sooner had I taken those hits I was also 2  laps behind the field and constantly having to struggle to stay in the race.

It's a real shame that I couldn't get on with this little retro budget gem as I really liked the level designs and the artwork for each of the stages was significantly different that each track brought a smile to my face before I was pummeled into submission after barely crossing the start line!
