Gun Slugs SEGA Mega Drive Review
Firstly, a huge thanks to Retro Room Games for kindly allowing us to cover a handful of their releases! The first of these…Gunslugs.

Originally developed and released back in 2013, Gunslugs is the result of the hard work at OrangePixel.

Since that time, it has been released across a myriad of platforms, and eventually made its way to Mega Drive - in both digital and physical formats – courtesy of Space Pants Games who designed this MD port from the ground up. A 2D action-platformer, Gunslugs puts you in the role of a special agent charged with taking down the Black Duck Army.

From the itch.io website:

GunSlugs is a Sega Genesis / Megadrive conversion of the hugely popular run'n'gun  game by OrangePixel.

Fight the evil Black Duck army as they try to take over the planet using their technology and a huge collection of foot-soldiers.

You'll get to fight on plane yards, jungles, arctica, egypt and finally the gates of Hell. Drive tanks, fly jetpacks and shoot eggs out of a chicken-gun… ..!

Gunslugs is a fast paced run and jump game with a rogue-like permadeath element. You get one life, and the only way you can extend that is by running into the Voodoo priest selling continue statues.

Unlock the roster of Gunslugs heroes as you go, and use them to advance your way to the gates of Hell to defeat the final boss.

Collect coins to buy upgrades, improvements, and mini-games like the Donkey Kong inspired Arcade game, the Gameboy level, the train-ride, sketchbook world and much more..

you might even bump into the man with a bow-tie and a blue box…

The pixel graphics are small and detailed, allowing incredible smoothness in the gameplay department, and each level is quite compact, and packed with suitably satisfying gun play. The permadeath element means that there’s an edge of tension as you make your way through the stages, the design of the game is such that you will take enemy fire due to the number of assailants onscreen, and so health drops and different weapons are paramount to survival, as you dash towards the helicopter that picks you up at the end of each stage.

Accompanying the tasty, crisp pixel visuals and tight controls is some truly glorious music that feels incredibly Mega Drive-y and has been re-worked from the chiptune originals – much to my personal preference!

There’s always a joy in playing a game such as this that was either originally designed for bespoke hardware, or has been specifically ported, as this feels very much at home on Sega’s system, in the same way that Xenocider felt like a pure Dreamcast title.

With selectable characters being available for specific stages, and the ‘one more go’ factor at a high, Gun Slugs is an awesome little title to pick up for the MD, with gameplay that ramps up nicely melded expertly to awesome music, it’s not a game that pushes the Mega Drive to its technical limits but has that ‘pick up and play’ quality that will keep you coming back for more.

We are covering the digital version here, but it’s worth noting that the physical edition comes with a booklet and clamshell case for those who want the real deal!
