Having previously enjoyed "My Time at Portia," my expectations for its spiritual successor were high, but "My Time at Sandrock" managed to surpass them in almost every way.
While it retains the cozy, farming-sim elements that made the first game so charming, Sandrock expands the genre with incredible depth, creativity, and a vibrant desert world that feels both fresh and inviting.
One of the things I love most about Sandrock is the sheer variety of activities available. You start with a small, rundown workshop just a humble shed and, through your efforts as a builder, you can transform it into a sprawling two-story home.
Progression in Sandrock is meaningful. You begin as a rookie builder, virtually unknown in the town, and through completing commissions, story quests, and helping the community, you can earn your way up to a prestigious five-star reputation. The questlines are particularly noteworthy because what starts as a series of typical building jobs quickly evolves into a narrative full of unexpected twists, humor, and heart. I found myself genuinely invested in the fate of Sandrock and its residents, and I was completely surprised by the way the story wrapped up.
The desert setting is more than just a backdrop; it influences nearly every aspect of gameplay. Water is a precious resource, and much of the town’s struggle centers on finding new ways to secure enough water and food for everyone. This adds a unique layer of challenge and immersion that sets Sandrock apart from other life sims.
Relationships are another standout feature. There are 21 characters you can build friendships or even romantic relationships with leading to marriage and starting a family if you choose. The social dynamics feel genuine, and each character brings their own quirks and stories. I especially appreciated how much depth was given to these interactions, making Sandrock feel like a truly lived-in place.
Resource gathering is varied and never feels tedious. Whether you’re kicking trees to collect seeds, foraging for wild plants, battling creatures, mining for rare ores, or exploring ruins, there’s always something to do. The game rewards curiosity and experimentation, and I rarely found myself repeating the same tasks in a boring way.

The satisfaction of upgrading your space, decorating, and personalizing every corner is incredibly rewarding. But the building doesn't stop with your house: you can also construct barns and stables, raise animals from babies to adults, and set up impressive machinery to help the town grow. The game offers a perfect balance between relaxing tasks and more complex crafting and construction projects, keeping you engaged at every turn.

SUMMARY
My experience with Sandrock was so captivating that I ended up earning the platinum trophy in just under 100 hours. For four months, it was the only game I wanted to play. The blend of story, creativity, exploration, and community made it feel like a second home.
