No More Heroes - Nintendo Switch eShop Release Review:

After being ranked #11 in the United Assassins Association, Travis Touchdown puts his trusty beam katana to the test as he faces off against the world's top 10 assassins in deadly battle.

It's a long way to the top, but this all-American otaku won't stop until he's the #1 assassin, baby!

Perhaps I’ve been spoiled but it takes a lot for a game to impress me.
Gigantic, opulent open-world map? Chuck it on the pile with the rest.
A hundred-hour epic adventure? I’ve got a life dammit.
Incredibly complex vehicular simulation? Ah, I’ll just play more Mario Kart.
Enter Paper Beast, which strolled into my life and promptly sent my socks flying off.

Inertial Drift is a stylish racing title that may take a few minutes to click with but boy, when you get the hang of it… you’ll feel like Cole Trickle (but you probably have a name with more gravitas).

There really is a lot to love about Inertial Drift, Level 91 Entertainment’s retro-futuristic racer. The music is vinyl-purchasingly good with its moody, synth beats that bleed neon, the perfect match to the intense, focused racing.

🚴‍♂️🚴🚴‍♀️ Descenders | Review | PS4 | "Fast, Frantic, Fun and Filthy" 🚴‍♂️🚴🚴‍♀️ @RageSquid #GameDev #IndieGames

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On
As stated in my previous review for Hotshot racing, this period has seen a lot of vehicular-based games come my way and Descenders was another solid example that does something different with the genre, In particular, using procedural generation as a key part of the gameplay.

At its heart, Descenders is a simple idea – get your bike to the bottom of the hill – but done with some really neat touches. This intrinsically accessible gameplay means that whilst the game can be challenging - and boy, does it get challenging – players of all skill levels can dive in and get involved.

🏎️🏁 Mini Motor Racing X | Review | Switch | "I Am On a Personal Quest To Find The Perfect Top-Down Racer" 🏎️🏁 @TheBinaryMill #GameDev #IndieGames

Mini Motor Racing X

Nintendo Switch

The Binary Mill

A wonderfully playable game that is packed with content and some really neat touches but feels subtly tarnished by its mobile roots.

As longtime readers will know, I am on a personal quest to find the perfect top-down racer. There have been many contestants but games such as Mashed and Wrecked still hold the top spot in my heart.

Whilst some are fundamentally flawed - such as the controls and physics in Tiny Racer - most are decent but lack the punch to really shake the genre. I’m pleased to say that Mini Motor Racing X is a very solid and fun experience, especially in multiplayer!

Hotshot Racing really stood out with its accessibility, stylish visuals, smooth gameplay and a great sense of balance.

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On
I have played a LOT of golf games in my life.

From early loves such as PGA Tour Golf 2 on the Sega Mega Drive through to the arcade classic NEO Turfmasters and the myriad Tiger Woods-era EA titles, I’ve had some really good times with the genre (Not forgetting a gem that I discovered only a couple of years ago called Links 2004 on the Xbox, definitely one to try if you missed it, amazing arcade-style game. Also, Golf Story is a golden ray of light).

⚔️ Mortal Shell | PS4 | Review | "A Tough Shell To Crack" ⚔️ @MortalShellGame #GameDev #IndieGames

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On
Mortal Shell came along for review at a very apt time. Only the weekend prior was I involved in a lengthy conversation about ‘Souls-Esque’ titles, where punishment and difficulty are built-in to the games themselves and pushed as a focal point.

Whilst I never clicked with the Dark Souls games, personally, my friend was telling me of a moment whereby, after two weeks of trying to defeat the final boss in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, he finally succeeded and, in his words, ‘fell to the floor on his back and clawed at the air with his limbs, whilst giggling...like a happy puppy’.

This level of dedication and perseverance isn’t really ingrained in me but I did appreciate and respect someone having that approach and ‘I can do this’ attitude to gaming.

😱 Carrion | Review | Nintendo Switch | "Carrion Screaming" 😱 @devolverdigital #IndieGames #GameDev

Carrion is a surprisingly addictive and satisfying ‘reverse-horror’ title that feels unique in its take on the genre.

Whilst there are games that cast you as an anti-hero or even full-blown villain, there aren’t many examples whereby you play an all-consuming, morphing beast that lurks in the shadows, a force of sheer terror.
