Video games don’t always have the best reputation but that doesn’t mean they are all bad and that you shouldn’t play them ever. Instead, you can choose to take another approach and begin to see the upside of participating in and engaging with different types of consoles and games.

The following list covers all the benefits of playing video games and the reasons why you may want to get started doing so yourself or continue doing so in the future.

Varney Lake XSX Review 8/10 "More Interactive Pulp Fiction From The Best In The Biz" 📑 @lcbgamestudio @ChorusWorldwide #IndieGames #GameDev

The second in the Pixel Pulp series from Argentinian developer LCB Game Studio (following Mothmen 1966), Varney Lake moves away from cryptids and towards classic vampirism. However, there are links throughout that connect the stories in an over-arching narrative.

Before I even go into the narrative, I have to commend the team for the astonishingly evocative introduction sequence, a wonderfully set up image of the story as if presented in a real magazine, complete with a schlocky cover, a missing poster of a child and a smoking match-head as beautifully melancholic music plays over the title screen (all too briefly!). I was instantly hips deep, it’s such an entrancing combination of visuals and audio.

Today Marks The Ten Year Anniversary Of The Creation Of Our Humble Website and We Hope You Enjoy Our Story So Far...

Our 1st Post 10 Years Ago

🥶ORIGIN

The year was 2012. I wanted to build a website because it felt like something productive to do with the very small amount of spare time that I had when my first child was born. I started a property buying guide website which is called propertynotepad.co.uk which still exists today.

I used a service that I can't remember the name of to build it but then I wanted more customisation of the website to make it look unique so I found Blogger by Google which made customisation fairly simple.

At this point, I realised that there was only so much I could write about the property buying process and decided that if I was using Blogger to build a website I should start something new that I could write forever about.

I looked at football as something I could talk about forever but it felt overplayed with too many footy blogs. After compiling a list of potential topics I thought about video games as a potential but yet again it felt like there were heaps of other people blogging about video games.

Although at this point in 2012 it didn't feel like the Retro Gaming scene had as many people blogging about it. So I went with a retro gaming-themed blog in order to rekindle my love of video games from my youth.

Omen of Sorrow Nintendo Switch Review 7/10 "The Horror! The Horror!" 👊 @eastasiasoft #IndieGame #GameDev

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On

When one thinks of horror icons pugilistically going at it hammer and tongs in a video game environment, the Darkstalkers series springs to mind.

Bright, cartoonish and 2D, Capcom’s ‘90s one-on-one fighter stood apart from others in the genre by having instantly recognisable archetypes from the pantheon of horror for players to choose from and rain down violent misery upon their opponents.

The gothic horror lover in me always enjoyed the games and especially the characters within.

Eastasiasoft’s Omen of Sorrow takes the same idea in a different direction and the 3D visuals and gloomier, darker, more gothic take on things result in a solid fighting game, but one that perhaps doesn’t quite bring the personality that makes a game a classic.

King of the Arcade XSX Review 6.5/10 "A fun, mini-game-laden budget title" 🕹️ @SuperVillainDev #IndieGame #GameDev

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On

King of the Arcade casts the player as a once-adored arcade master that has now fallen to the lows of living in his mum’s basement, with zero cash and mounting debt. In a last-ditch attempt to get a job, he applies at the local arcade, where the owner recognises him from his glorious gaming past.

Sworn to a life out of the limelight, our protagonist is dragged into a situation where he must once again waggle his joystick better than anyone else, as he strives to best the thugs from a competing arcade at their chosen games…or not, as the case may be.

Flight From The Dark | Book Review | Author: Joe Dever | Publisher: Magmanund "Timeless Adventures For All -You Are Lone Wolf!" 🐺⚔️ #GameBook

When I had the opportunity to cover Magnamund’s Flight in the Dark gamebook, it dawned on me that I used to adore the gamebooks of my childhood and teens, but then they seemed to fall by the wayside - for some reason - for decades.

A couple of years ago, I was in a charity shop in my home town of Cardiff and saw a good number of Fighting Fantasy books for sale and grabbed them all. After reading a couple, the fun of the experience set back in and it sparked some conversations with friends – especially my GF colleague Max – as the design of the books is timeless, and there’s universal accessibility in them that I’ll touch upon later.

In short, the chance to write about Joe Dever’s Flight in the Dark could not have been more timely.
