๐Ÿ•น️๐ŸŽฎ๐Ÿ”ฎ Past, Present, Future: Gaming Consoles ๐Ÿ•น️๐ŸŽฎ๐Ÿ”ฎ

The gaming world is one that moves incredibly quickly. What is all the rage today will soon fall from prominence, replaced by new, exciting developments; while the present day remains important, with gaming, there always seem to be one foot that is placed firmly in the future.

The above is true of almost all aspects of gaming but is perhaps most strongly felt when it comes to consoles. As a read through eight generations of gaming history quickly makes clear, consoles have come a long way in a relatively short space of time. If you’re in your 20s or 30s now, the chances are that the consoles you used as a teenager are now considered to be almost-obsolete, and the console features you now see as basic requirements would once have been innovative and exciting. Change happens; consoles evolve, and the world of gaming keeps turning - so it’s worth taking a moment to think about where consoles might go next.

The Current Selection
It’s fair to say that the current range of consoles offer gaming functionality that would once have been considered nothing more than miraculous.

In particular, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One helped to redefine gaming in their own ways, but these game-changing consoles are beginning to look a little long in the tooth at around six years old. Given previous release patterns, it’s fair to assume that as impressive as the current generation is, they will soon be replaced.

So what can you expect?

Both PlayStation and Microsoft have confirmed that new consoles will be released sometime in the future, with the releases named as Playstation 5 and Xbox Two respectively. Unfortunately, almost everything else about these consoles remains incredibly secretive, including the release dates.

As a result, all gamers can go off at the moment is rumours and speculation, aware that some of the predictions may be well off the mark. However, there are a few exciting ideas on the horizon:
  • Continued focus on the 4K. 4K resolution must be one of the most promoted ideas across all forms of visual media, and it seems likely that both consoles will focus again in this area.
  • Commitment to VR. VR is something of a controversial subject, with some believing it is the future of gaming, and others dismissing it as more of a fad. Some have insisted VR is a fad, and then recanted. However, it seems unlikely that either PlayStation or Microsoft will junk the whole concept for their next releases, so expect to see improvements to VR, with additional, dedicated power a realistic possibility.
  • Disc-less technology. Streaming is clearly seen as the only way forward for gaming in the future, but the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Two releases have both been rumoured to complete the paradigm shift by moving to disc-less technology.

In Conclusion

Unfortunately, it may be some time before we see the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Two on shelves, but when they do arrive, we can be sure that gamers will greet these new consoles with the same excitement and intrigue as they have offered to every previous iteration.
