Golf has always been my comfort food genre for video games. I’ve grown up playing classic golf games such as World Class Leaderboard, Jack Nicklaus Greatest 18 Holes, PGA European Tour, Sensible Golf, Everybody’s Golf, Neo Turf Masters and Tiger Woods on the PS2, Xbox 360 and the PSP to name just a few.

Recently I stumbled across Pixel Pro Golf on my iPhone and it’s been my go-to toilet break game for the last month or so when I have a few spare moments to play something on my phone.

The pixel art aesthetic brings back memories of Sensible Golf crossed with Neo Turf Masters. That immediately struck a chord with me and grabbed my attention even before I’d swung a club in anger.

The main gameplay loop is working your way through the golfing ranks from beginner to pro and earning ranking points by completing tournaments across multiple golf courses. As you win tournaments or get placed you will earn cash to spend on three tiers of golf clubs such as woods, irons, putters and wedges.

The control system is the classic 3 click system that we all know and love and this works really well for this simple but elegant arcade golf game.

The courses are beautifully drawn and get more and more challenging as you work your way through the ranks.

The greens have a gradient system based on arrows which work well as you plan where you want to place your ball on the green taking into consideration green speed, slopes and wind.

The things that are missing from this game that would make it an absolute classic are as follows:

  • Distance stats on drives so as that you can beat your longest drive

  • More things to spend your winnings on as it’s pretty quick to buy all the best clubs

  • Maybe a variation on the golf courses to include some challenges or something other than just tournament golf

  • I couldn’t ever seem to get an online game vs a human opponent

These are all minor things in a game that is ultimately excellent arcade fun and well worth the £2.49 to buy the ad-free version of the game. I’d love to see Pixamo Games make additions to this lovely indie game and keep improving on this awesome golf title as it’s my idea of an awesome golf game that has meant my toilet breaks have lastest at least 9 holes on most days!

Right, I’m off to work out how best to play a 75% 6 iron shot with a 4.5 mph side wind onto a postage stamp green.
