Hogwart’s Legacy PS5 Review 6/10 "...It's fine" 🧙‍♂️

Let’s get one thing right clear right off the bat: I didn’t buy Hogwarts Legacy. I wouldn’t be seen dead giving any money to J.K. Rowling after the shit she’s come out with over the last few years and, as someone who doesn’t care in the slightest about Harry Potter, would have been a very easy game to skip. 

But, for professional reasons, I was obligated to play the game prior to release and was sent a code by WB Games in order to do so. So here’s what I thought after coming to this game with zero excitement and a powerfully icky feeling at loading it up for the first time.

Risen Xbox Series X Review 7/10 "Risen Has Risen Again" 🏹 @Piranha_Bytes #GameDev #IndieGames

I originally played Risen back in 2010 on Xbox 360, it was a port that wasn’t particularly well-received at the time, but it came from a period of my life where I was hips deep into janky RPGs such as Boiling Point, Hard Truck Apocalypse, White Gold: War in Paradise and Precursors – so some dodgy controls, graphical glitches and ropey AI were par for the course for me at the time, and as such I had a lot of fun with Risen.

This re-release isn’t a re-master or remake – as the upcoming Gothic will be – but instead is a sort of lightly ‘touched-up’ version that adds full controller support, reduces – but doesn’t fully remove – loading times and has an improved UI. It does run at a mostly solid 60fps, which is a huge leap over the aforementioned Xbox 360 port, although probably level with the original PC version.

These long, dark nights suit the genre of smooth jazz perfectly, and The OneUps really know how to roll. this was my first exposure to the group, a band that has been around – as the title of the album attests – for twenty years.

Having released many volumes on CD, this is the band’s first vinyl release and has been curated to showcase a track from each previously released CD volume, giving a year-on-year account of how the members and sound have evolved through the life of the band.
