"Mothmen 1966 is a 'Pixel Pulp' - a visual novel featuring a fusion of exceptional writing and stunning illustration, inspired by mid-20th century pulp fiction and 80s home computer graphics - set amongst the strange occurrences of the Leonid meteor shower of 1966."

🏨 Fobia - St. Dinfna Hotel Xbox Series X Review 6/10 “A case of metathesiophobia” 🏨 @transvaalgf @PulsatrixStudio #GameDev #IndieGames

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On

I’ve had a bit of a problem with budget horror titles in the past few months, every game I have played is just trying to be like its predecessors - mostly Resident Evil -  which is fine in small doses, but when every game is mired in the past, it just feels dull.

I’ve really wanted a game to shake up horror and be bold and try something completely new.

Enter Fobia-St Dinfna Hotel, I had seen the trailer and had my reservations - and on playing through the game, yeah, it falls into the category of titles just described. It’s not a bad game - though for me and a few others it does have one major problem which I will go into later - it just feels like we’ve been here before and not just bought the T-shirt but also the mug, commemorative plates, and snow globe.

👹👺🎎 Pocky & Rocky Reshrined PS4 Review 8/10 "My Pixels Bring All The Boys To the Yard" 👹👺🎎 @Natsume_Inc #Retrogaming #Retrogames #PixelArt

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On

If you loved the original SNES games then you'll adore this!

Pocky and Rocky Reshrined sits somewhere between a sequel and a remaster. With the opening stages being a re-run of the original SNES games and only as you progress through the levels does it then deviate to a different and even confusing new story. To be fair to the game beyond those early levels this is definitely a NEW Pocky & Rocky game and maybe those early levels were in there to get the nostalgia glands flowing with nostalgia juice before the new stuff kicks in.

🕵️ American Theft ‘80s PC Review 7/10 "I’ll never get bored of going out nicking" 🕵️ @NobleMuffins @Play_Way #GameDev #IndieGames

I have been LUCKY whenever I dive into the PC goody bag of The Mighty Games Freezer. As I primarily focus on console releases, twice now I’ve been in situations where I can cover some PC action, and it’s been just the ticket! The first game was Aground - one of my all-time favourites - and now I get to talk about the follow-up to Thief Simulator, American Theft ‘80s. Good.

The vinyl soundtrack to one-man indie developer Tomas Sala’s 2020 release The Falconeer is a somewhat different beast from the type of soundtracks that I usually cover here at GF HQ.

Whilst it is traditional insomuch as it contains 31 tracks from the game, it also contains several passages carefully woven into the music that acts as spoken word accompaniments, allowing the listener to follow the narrative journey of the game in audio format.

The more I listened to the record, the more I came to view it as a hybrid release of soundtrack and audiobook, telling a tale through both the medium of majestic song and richly delivered spoken word segments.

🚀 Remote Life Nintendo Switch Review 7/10 "Insert Me Into The Mother Ship" 🚀 @NextGameLevel #IndieGames #GameDev #SHMUP

Remote Life is a classic side-scrolling shoot 'em up. Think of an updated version of R-Type and then some. Despite having an oddly forgettable name, Remote life is actually a cracking old-school shooter with super tight levels and great visuals that will appeal to all shmup heads out there who love a good ol' challenge.

🧟 Evil Dead: The Game Xbox Review 7.5/10 “Grab your boomstick, open up your Necronomicon and get ready to be told ‘you suck’.” 🧟 @transvaalgf

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On

I have a love/hate relationship with this style of game. I ‘love’ them… and the people I play with ‘hate’ me, well, unless I play the killer, then they love me - you see, I’m bad at these games, I know this because a very agitated 14-year-old told me that I sucked repeatedly for about twenty minutes. in all fairness, I had been hiding in a wardrobe for a very long time, whilst my teammates got massacred by a hulking seven-foot monster in a hockey mask, but the truth can hurt and anyway; he was too young to be playing the game in the first place.

New Mega Drive games always feel special, whether they push the little black box to the edge of its capabilities or perhaps capture an earlier period of its shelf life. The Curse of Illmoore Bay is a title that feels like it captures the essence of Sega in 1993/4 with its platforming action, visual style and kiddy-creepy approach.

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On

My Wonderboy is Wonder Boy In Monster Land on the SEGA Master System. Wonder Boy has always been an intrinsic part of my video games origin story. I remember the first time that I played a Wonder Boy game was in a Video Rental Shop back in the 80s. There was an original Wonder Boy arcade machine just cosying up in the corner of the store in between a Cardboard cut-out of a Gremlin and a stack of Arnie VHS tapes. My overriding memory of playing that arcade game was that it felt quite tough to control and that the skateboard pick-up item was a pain in the arse.

It’s with a heavy heart that I put pen to paper for this review. I don’t think it’s right to review a game without having at least seen the credits. After all, there are too many titles that start with a bang and end up sputtering out in a haze of dull repetition.

But I didn’t get to the end of We Were Here Forever

Hell, I didn’t even get close.

Here’s why.

👁️ The Dark Eye: Memoria Nintendo Switch Review 7/10 “A gorgeous but at times frustrating experience” 👁️ @daedalic #GameDev #IndieGames

Share This Post On Share to Facebook Share to Twitter Share This Post On

The Dark Eye is a German fantasy tabletop role-playing game created in 1984, it is so popular in Germany that it actually outsells Dungeons and Dragons. Unsurprisingly, in being so popular, The Dark Eye series has spawned numerous video games including two point-and-click adventure titles from Daedalic Entertainment, these are - The Dark Eye: Chains of Satinav, and its direct sequel The Dark Eye: Memoria.
