There’s something really timeless about a well-done platform game with pixel visuals. A purity to the gameplay that makes everyone feel they can pick up and play, and Go! Go! Pogogirl! Is a shining example of just this.

Your character is a forever-bouncing girl on a pogo stick who must bounce her way through twenty levels – with each group of five representing one of the four seasons.

The controls are tight and accessible, with the ability to pound down on enemies, and also perform a spin attack pretty much making up your main arsenal of moves. Don’t think that this basic control setup means that it’ll be easy, though – in terms of challenge, Go! Go! Pogogirl! Is no slouch, and you’ll need some surprisingly saucy accuracy in order to see the game through to its end, with some of the ground-pound timing really needing to be on-point in some circumstances.

Considering that Go! Go! Pogogirl! Is priced under a fiver, there’s a surprising amount of bounce for your buck in the boss battles, secret areas, replayability, and gem-collecting.

It runs incredibly smoothly and features a classic visual style that will have you ensconced in a wave of nostalgia before you can say “Parallax Scrolling”.

The soundtrack – whilst comprised of energetic ditties – naturally runs its course due to the eternal loop for each season, it’s a shame as the rest of the presentation and gameplay is so strong. Some more variation in the audio would have really gone a long way.

SUMMARY

If you are a fan of colourful platformers with challenge, Go! Go! Pogogirl! Is a nice throwback in terms of style and design, with the pogo mechanic being a nice touch to add a spin on things. Essentially, it’s the best part of Ducktales on the NES stretched out for an entire game. Good.

Just don’t be surprised if you find yourself lowering the volume after the 100th musical loop.
