When I opened the box of 78 floppy diskettes containing Toxic Games’ Q.U.B.E 10th Anniversary Edition, I was intrigued. I cradled them in my arms with all the gentleness of a new father. I was curious, however, as I was due to review a digitally downloaded Xbox game, so what did I have in my hands?

It turned out the disks were for a cancelled FMV-heavy video game adaptation of the distinctly average Canadian horror film Cube, from 1997. Shame, it could have been something special.

Since that moment I was hooked on the world, the story and the characters.

Lifestream is my attempt at re-telling this classic story through the music featured in the game. I hope that you can listen to this album and re-live the incredible adventure and story that is Final Fantasy 7.

Those who have followed my reviews over the last few years may remember my odd fascination with Autobahn Police Simulator 2, a game that -  whilst not scoring highly due to the numerous technical issues - ignited my passion for a police simulation title that focused on the basics of the job.

There was clearly a lot of fuel in the tank in pottering around handing out tickets, catching crooks and generally doing pretty standard police work. I was genuinely disheartened when Autobahn Police Simulator 3 failed to capitalise on what could have been a wonderfully quirky game based on typical police work…

BUT... then along came Police Simulator: Patrol Officers, and whilst this admittedly isn’t a super-high-scoring-rootin’-tootin’-Frozen-In-Time-Games-Freezer-10/10-recommendation… there really is a lot to appreciate here, and again – patch up and build on, hopefully, end up with a pretty top-class game, although that does feel some ways down the line.

Paul Raschid is a big name in the FMV/interactive movie genre, having written and directed the wonderful and engaging Five Dates. I have something of an odd history with dance music. Like many who grew up in the mid-90s, my distinct opinion was that proper music had to have proper instruments, i.e. guitar, bass, and drums. Even the keyboard was a bit racy for my liking. 

That said, I never turned off thumping video game soundtracks as, to me, they didn’t count, so I would happily listen to the mental Rotterdam Nation across the Ridge Racer games and think nothing of it. 

Of course, like every grunge-slash-indie fan, once I heard Born Slippy, all bets were off and I remain a dedicated raver to this day.

I’ve always been a sucker for black and white, sketchy, pen ‘ n ink art styles in video games. A recent example would be the wonderful Mundaun, although here, Mundaun’s folkloric, creeping horror is replaced with breezy 2D strolling and featherweight puzzling, combined with calming music and audio to create a relaxing atmosphere as you make your way through the world.

A Winding Path starts with your character outside a farmhouse, near a scarecrow and some fields. Viewed from the side, the sketched world is captured in an expressive format, with the sounds of wind whistling through the fields and trickling water blending well with the penmanship that makes up the visuals.

I’ve played quite a few LEGO games over the years – mostly in local multiplayer – and they’ve always had a lot to offer in terms of accessible fun.

Admittedly, the sheer amount of movie franchise-based games did get a bit wearying, but LEGO City Undercover and the more open-world, sandbox games were highlights, and so – when offered LEGO Bricktales to review, I just assumed that there would be an inherent quality to whatever approach was taken here (as I’d not heard of the game beforehand) and yes, LEGO has (mostly) woven their magic again, and this time in a game that feels the most traditional ‘LEGO’ game yet.

Card battlers have really become a thing in recent times. Series like Final Fantasy has had them as minigames for years, and then there's Witcher 3's Gwent, as well as standalone offerings like Slay the Spire and Monster Train.

Foretales sort of comes from this tradition, although here, the big focus is on the plot rather than battling. In this game, you progress the story by playing cards from your deck.

Depending on which character you use and your playstyle, you can mostly avoid enemies, instead moving through scenes with clever use of card effects.
